Itinerary description
Circular route up Glen Doll using Jock's Road then a traverse to River South Esk and descent to starting point at Forestry Commission car park. Initially follow Jock's Road through Glen Doll Wood and after leaving wood ascend to Cairn Lunkard about half mile after you pass the shelter. Great views back down to Glen Doll. At around 830 metre height you strike out at right angle to Jock's path heading NE - hard to see exactly where but if you keep in between Loch Esk (do not descend to) and Criags of Loch Esk to your right you will then pick up the path which is marked by sticks in places. It becomes clearer as you descend to the river. Follow river down past waterfall and path then becomes landrover track as you descend. After about another 1.5 miles it is worth crossing the river on footbridge and following other side to avoid having to ford the river lower down. Return to car park at start. Altogether a stunning 4 hour walk with a bit of everything - forest, good climb, great views including Lochnager to north, waterfalls and beautiful valleys. About 4 hours.
