Itinerary description
Glacier Lakes Trail is a 7.1 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Nevada City, California that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from June until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Stunning hike and amazing views from the ridgelines and the lakes of course. Good mix of up s and downs. I did the sand ridge trail from the lake to make it a loop. Excited to see this in spring.
Road is super rocky, highly recommend high clearance vehicle. It takes quite some time to drive just a few miles.
Really great trail that ends at Glacier Lake. Definitely plan to swim there. Then return on the Sand Ridge trail, which makes a loop and hooks back up with the Glacier Trail about a mile from the start. Sand Ridge offers gorgeous views and is a nice alternative to returning on the trail you came on. The uphill climbs on this hike are tiring. There are no switchbacks so the just gradually climb and, unfortunately, you start the trail going down so you end the trail with a slog up a hill. But it’s a great hike. Our round trip was 8.2 miles. Also, we were there on a Saturday and the parking lot was super full but there weren’t that many people in the trail. There was a big group camping at Glacier Lake but even so, there was only one other person in the lake when we swam. Also, no mosquitos anywhere on the trail. My biggest warning: the road in is awful. Dirt, full of potholes and bumps, and it takes forever. Probably took us 40 minutes to go 5 miles. Granted, I’m not used to roads like that but just be forewarned! Once you get there - it’s fantastic! Lots of wildflowers.
