Itinerary description
Hike totaled 7.35km with 2147m of ascent over 6h36m. On a hot August day it was a challenging hike that included scrambling (Grade 2 in two sections) and navigating through steep terrain. Optional paths up the ridge can be explored. Start from the village of Shtiqën (by the mosque) and use the morning shade to go through at least 40% of the trail to preserve energy for the rest. The best tip I can share to take on the West face of Gjallica is to bring plenty of water, 3L+, depending on your needs. Think about your descent, it is long, steep and taxing on the knees. We took the same route for the descent however we circumvented the scrambling sections by going through the gorge, which will require a few short navigations through vegetation. Wildlife is present in the area, we encountered relatively fresh bear poo on our descent. (A bear attack on a shepherd was recorded in the area not too long ago ; ~2019) Would not recommend to solo since it is a very long and isolated path. Total roundtrip took approximately 12hrs.
