Itinerary description

The trailhead starts by Lilly Lake which is just southwest of Fallen Leaf Lake at Tahoe. The trail takes one up into the beautiful Desolation Wilderness and offers spectacular high Sierra views. In the summer this trail receives hordes of visitors (by the hundreds on weekends), on their way to Mount Tallac, but early in the season when there is snow on the ground, hardly a soul can be encountered. When I did this trail in May, Gilmore Lake was mostly frozen and the trail was covered in deep snow in many places. I had to cross several gushing drainages and one snow bridge detour from the trail. I was rewarded with wilderness views all to myself and drumming sooty grouse at the Dick's Pass junction. The hike back is all downhill, and pleasant even when I had to hike back through the beginning section which is over a rough stone road.
