Itinerary description
Hike with Fjallafélagið 2020-06-06.
It is recommended to hike this trail with local that knows the area.
This hike starts at the campsite in Þakgil. The ascent from the Þakgil gorge is really steep and needs good caution while climbing up.
The main part of the hike when upon the heath is easy and in a spectacular scenery, especially when you get to the ridge where you overlook the Katla glacier and Huldufjöll mountains. Make sure to stop by to see Huldufoss waterfall where the glacier falls of the cliff side.
When starting the descent an extra special caution should be taken when hiking the glacier tail and possibly use lines and harnesses.
When off the glacier yet again beautiful gorges appear with stunning scenery.
The descent into the gorge is dangerous and extreme caution is necessary. I advice not to go this route in wet conditions.
We ended our trip in the hut owned by Ferðafélag Mýrdælinga but from there to Þakgil is extra 3-4 km walk where you need to cross the river Stakká at least once.
