Itinerary description

To get to the trailhead to Gibbs Lake, one must travel up a 4 wheel drive road to Upper Horse Meadow outside of Vining California in the Inyo National Forest. This trail is an excellent day hike up to the lake with some great views of the very rugged mountains outside of Yosemite Park. There is also a pretty good view of Mono Lake. The trail starts out steeply but flattens out the closer one gets to Gibbs Lake. Since this trail has no ties with other trails it is not as heavily used as other trails. The trail itself is in excellent condition as of 2009. I recommend this trail for a day hike or an overnight if you want to fish at Gibbs or bushwhack up to the more secluded Kidney Lake. The round trip travel time is about 3 to 3.5 hours.
