Itinerary description
This is one of the most memorable hikes I have had recently.
We kicked off at hot springs in Prohodnoye gorge next to AlmaArasan. Following the gorge, a group of 5 who managed to follow me along the gorge got to Terra field.
After having 15 minutes tea break we decided to cross the river and head to Big Almaty mountain. Guess we decided to take a shortcut and ascend along the western ridge. Which was a huge mistake, so don’t do that. As it’s most likely category 3A/3B trail. I have realized that standing at the top of the Tourist peak while looking at BAP and laughing at our self-confidence.
The western ridge is rocky,
with plenty of gendarmes and walls. So at some point, I decided to descend and skirt around to get to Marble pass.
It took us a while to descend since we didn’t want to lose too much of the height either. Once managed to get to the pass @3400m ASL it was a matter of time to get to the peak. In slightly more than half an hour, I was standing at the southern summit, and the rest of the team was gradually catching up. The weather was nice, and as such, I decided to proceed to the north summit to enjoy the view of the entire Almaty city. In 15-20 minutes I was staring at the view.
After taking dozen of pictures the weather was getting worse, I quickly turned around and caught up with my mates at the pass. Where they were having tea in a shelter. We decided to take out chances and return along the road, it has okey’ish tarmac, so walking next 5-6 miles wasn’t that difficult.
Further had to run along the pipeline and get to the upper tollgate/block post. Where we managed to get a ride.
