Itinerary description
This very easy tour starts in Kerpen, a small town, 25 km west of Cologne. The trail leads you via Kerpen downtown area to the Marienfeld, a recultivated open pit mine. The former mine, which was opened in the 1950s, was the first large-scale open pit mine in the Rhein area. Mining was discontinued in 1986. Today it's reforested incl. a near-natural looking lake area, providing good hiking opportunities. The entire Marienfeld is crisscrossed by a 20 km long, designated trail network. Even the Pope was already here (in 2005).
The trail starts/ends at the bus stop "Auf dem Vorst". From here busses connect to Horrem rail station with frequent trains to Cologne.
