Itinerary description
Difficulty: Moderate
Very nice hike to the Mount Kazbek Glacier from the Gergeti church car park
Time: 9 hours. We were enjoying the views and taking pics, having a picnic and a little nap.
The difficulty of the hike is moderate. The trail entails hiking 1600m up and down but is not excessively demanding, and the path is easy to follow, as it is frequently walked.
Around 200m on the trek you have to decide between the classic and scenic route. We took the latter as the views of the rig and river. As we read before the hike, the classic route goes through a valley and there are not many views.
This was confirmed by fellow hikers when both routes merge in a common trail on the way to the Glacier.
On the scenic route, there is a fancy shelter being built, and it is at the end of the scenic route before joining with the classic route.
Higher on, there are two other shelters. You can also see a camp with people prepping for the glacier and Mount Kazbek.
There is a Georgian Checkpoint before you reach the glacier. You only need to fill up some documents and show your passport if you go higher than the end of the glacier.
The way down is relatively easy and has great views from the scenic route.
Hope you enjoy the hike!
Tips:
>Mount Kazbek has no clouds either early in the morning or evening.
>Check the weather. Even in summer, rain is likely.
>We walked to the Gergeti church after the trek and got great pics of Mount Kazbek.
