Itinerary description

This was a lonesome 3 day hike on the amazing Peneda-Gerês National Park throughout marked and unmarked trails, with distances set for each day around 12 km. Nothing really out of the ordinary if you feel fit, of course. The starting point was the small village Parada do Outeiro south of Pitões das Júnias, the latter being famous for its very old half ruined monastery. Sleeping on the mountain with all that mesmerizing sky and sunset for me alone was entirely worth the poor nights rest.

Water was never an issue here, with many clean streams to be found along the way. The weather was perfect with temperatures of 20º-23º C during the day and mostly cloudy skies. During the night temperatures dropped to 9º-10º C with the humidity getting extreme on the second night at the monastery.

Along the way you didn't really see many wild animals, though when they came out it felt very special. I was fortunate enough to be territorially challenged by a courageous roe deer and by a herd of semi-wild garranos, a very old Portuguese horse breed unfortunately threatened by extinction. I also saw a beautiful wild goat with an impressive pair of long curved horns. Other animals were a big snake, many iberian wall lizards, birds, and insects. Very liberating was also the buzzing sound of the working bees.

There is also the possibility of combining this trail with a second one to the north of Pitões, which I decided to leave out due to lack of time and condition. Coming soon...
