Itinerary description
This hike has so many amazing things about it, it is hard to know where to begin!
The trail climbs steadily upward through a beautiful open forest of gary oak, arbutus and fir trees - some of them huge! Along the way you will have wonderful views looking down into both Cowichan Bay and Genoa Bay, emerging finally onto a bluff with a 180 degree southerly view taking in Saltspring Island in the east to the Cowichan River Valley in the west.
Looking south, you can see the Saanich Peninsula, the Malahat and beyond them the Sooke hills and the mountains of the Olympic Penninsula.
At the time of this hike, the mountain meadows were sprinkled with wild flowers.
This is very challenging hike, taking you from sea level at Genoa Bay to just below the top of Mt. Tzouhalem. Bring lots of water - especially if hiking in the summer months.
It is possible to continue on another kilometre or so from the return point of this hike and connect with the vast Mt. Tzouhalem trail system.
Retreads Hiking Club gives the section of this hike an AVA rating of 4D.
