Itinerary description
Three day hike from Geehi Dam to Valentine's Hut (1st night), Greymare Hut (2nd night) and back to Geehi Dam. All walking on 4x4 tracks. Lots of water available from mountain creeks and rivers. Swim in Valentine's Creek, which wasn't too cold. Carried and slept in a tent, but cooked and ate in the huts, sharing it with other hikers. Weather variable, being Alpine country. A great walk!
Lots of wildlife; watch out for snakes. That's a copperhead snake, relatively not so dangerous compared to a brown snake, and common in the high country.
Other hikers were carrying fly fishing gear. We carried our own food for the three days.
The huts usually have a dry selection of firewood. Carry firestarters. They also have pit toilets, so carry toilet paper. Don't forget to take out every scrap of rubbish!
