Itinerary description
WARNING: this is not a marked route, it was an attempt to climb to the top of El Hacho from the south, and it is steep and potentially dangerous. I would describe it as a climb/scramble rather than a walk! If you start from the track opposite the Captación de agua and walk up to the first wire gate, there is a fence going up to the right. Here there are two options: 1. Pass through the gate and then climb steeply uphill with the fence on your right (it's a bit overgrown though) or 2. Do what we did here, which is go a little further along the path and then zig-zag our way up goat paths to the top of the fence. When you reach the top of the fence it becomes more difficult; there are some goat paths but nothing obvious. We went over to the right below a line of pine trees and then climbed up to the ridge where we eventually emerged triumphant inbetween the west peak(trig point) and the east peak (where the visitors book is situated). Be warned, this is hands and feet type climbing in many sections and for most sensible people I would recommend the usual marked route starting from the back of the petrol station.
