Turn to Galle Fort, the famous fortress in the south of Sri Lanka. A fortress with a lot of history that we do not hesitate to visit. Nice day that awaits us!
START:
We arrive in Galle and enter Galle Fort through its main gate. Here, as soon as we enter, we find a large roundabout and plenty of space to leave our tuk tuk. We will have the beginning of the route at the Clock Tower.
DESCRIPTION:
With the tuk tuk parked, we began the route to explore Galle Fort, motivated by the route proposed in our guide to Sri Lanka. In this proposal, the guide marks all the points of interest in the fortress and describes each one of them, so we did not hesitate to copy the route.
We begin walking at the height of the Clock Tower, the starting point of the route. Next, we will pass in front of the main gate and visit Amangalla, one of the corners of the fortress. In Amangalla we find a multitude of children and young people practicing sports.
We continue the route visiting a Dutch reformed church, a bell tower, All Saints Anglican church, the fortress bazaar and the Dutch governor's house. Very comfortable and uncomplicated ride.
We continue along the route, taking a detour and find a map and the ancient door. Brief conversation with a local and a few minutes to enjoy the street market that is always found here.
We leave the old gate behind and reach the black bastion, which we cannot access. At this same point, there is also Court Square, a square with a lot of atmosphere!
We now continue towards the south, with our eyes set on the lighthouse. We will visit a Dutch hospital and Faro Beach, with beautiful views of the fortress and Jungle Beach, on the other side of the bay.
After this section, we arrive at the lighthouse, which is beautiful. Many photos around the area and we continue!
We will have the next point of interest very close. It is the Meeran Mosque, a beautiful building that we also saw from various angles.
We followed the route westwards, arriving at Flag Rock, a spectacular viewpoint and the southernmost point of Galle Fort. We enjoyed the views, although it was very hot. It's midday and we must hydrate ourselves and look for the few shadows that the route offers us.
It is time to detour towards the north, always along the fortress. Soon we arrive at the Triton bastion, where we must turn to the right and wander around the fortress for a bit. We took the opportunity to rest and sit down and have a drink. The heat is tremendous!
After hydrating ourselves, we continued the route along a very narrow, beautiful street with a lot of atmosphere. We walk through this beautiful part until we go out to a more open place again, at which time we can enjoy the Sudharmalaya Temple.
We cross a small meadow and walk again outside the fortress, reaching the Clippenberg bastion, the Aeolus bastion, the tomb of the Muslim holy man and the star bastion. The weather begins to change radically, becoming cloudy and some wind picking up. It's stormy!
Back in the north of the fortress, all that remains is to continue until the Clock Tower, visible from here. A few steps and it starts to rain heavily! The storm has caught us! We have no choice but to protect ourselves!
After a few minutes, the storm stops, allowing us to leave our hiding place. All that remains is to finish the route, at the height of the Clock Tower.
CONCLUSION:
Galle Fort is a fortress worth knowing, with beautiful landscapes and full of history. Many incentives to enjoy a comfortable walk. Beautiful panoramic views of the surroundings of Galle Fort, Jungle Beach and the sea, which disappears towards the south. Recommendable!
