A. Gavin Falls
Jacks River Falls is one of the most-visited sites in the Cohutta Wilderness, among the largest in the Eastern U.S. with more than 35,000 acres. Advanced hikers, campers, and backpackers seek out its isolated beauty. Hikers who take on the nine-mile Beech Bottom Trail in spring are rewarded with multiple waterfalls and towering hemlocks.

C. Old Mill
In 1846, Roger and McDonald started building a water-powered mill along Sweetwater Creek and on December 21, 1849, the five-story mill was in operation.[3] McDonald and Rogers incorporated their business as Sweetwater Manufacturing Company, which made cotton, yarn and fabric. In the summer of 1864, during the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War, General Joseph E. Johnston removed the Confederate Army across the Chattahoochee River, leaving the New Manchester factory exposed to the Union Army.[4] On July 2, 1864, two divisions of Union cavalry under Colonel Silas Adams (1st Kentucky) and cavalry under Major Haviland Thompkins (14th Illinois) of General Stoneman’s personnel, approached the factory with orders to shut it down and arrest all the employees.[

D. Black Bears
This area has more black bears per square mile than anywhere in the country. Bears typically live in swamps and forested areas, espe-cially mature mixed pine stands that offer a plentiful sup-ply of natural foods and trees and thickets that they canescape to for security. Standing, hollow trees are common den sites for Georgia bears. However, brush piles, rock crevices or other places that offer protection may be used. The typical life span of a bear is about 8 to 15 years. Wildbears tend to live 23 percent longer than "garbage" bears(those that exist on unnatural foods). Adult bears are gen-erally up to six feet in length and about three feet high atthe shoulder. Female adult bears can weigh up to 300pounds and attain breeding status about 3.5 - 4.5 years ofage. Adult males can weigh over 500 pounds and maybreed as early as 1.5 years of age. Bears have poor eye-sight but an excellent sense of smell. They are good treeclimbers, can swim well and are able to run at speeds of upto 30 miles per hour. Female bears become sexuallymature at two to five years of age. The breeding season isin July and cubs are born in the den in late January orFebruary. Bear cubs weigh about eight ounces when born,are relatively undeveloped and entirely dependent on themother. Cubs stay with their mother throughout the firstyear, den with her during the following winter and staywith her until she finally drives them away the followingspring. Due to this extended care for their young, femalesonly produce a litter every two years
