Itinerary description
Technical difficulty: 1/5
Note #1: Ignore the path at Intersection #11. We misread the sings and continued deeper into the woods instead of descending to the lakeshore. You can return to the lake even through the woods, but it will be a larger loop. So, at Intersection #11 just continue down towards the Upper Lake.
Note #2: There are many, many intersecting trails around the two lakes. What you want to follow generally is the "Trail around the Upper Lake" and "Trail around the Lower Lake" (ita. Sentiero di Lagho Superiore/Inferiore).
Note #3: The lakes are located near the borders of Italy, Austria and Slovenia, so they have names in all 3 languages: Laghi di Fusine (ITA), Belopeška jezera (SLO), and Weissenfelser Seen (GER).
Note #4: Entrance to the lakes is paid if you go by motorized vehicles (4€/day for cars). Entrance is free for cyclists and hikers. You can also leave the car on the side of the road before the toll booth, but you'll have to hike to the lakes for 20-30 minutes.
--
This is a nice, and relaxing mix of a walking and hiking trail around two mountain glacial lakes. Both lakes are family-friendly, but small children should be mindful of the tree-roots and you will not be able to take a stroller on the trail.
The tour around the Upper Lake is a bit more "wild", the woods are deeper and there are slight ascents and descents, with gnarled tree-roots all over the ground. It has a very nice foresty feel.
The tour around the Lower Lake is close to the very shoreline, alongside a well-beaten path. There are numerous photo opportunities around both lakes, though the Lower Lake is a bit more picturesque.
The trails can be connected into one larger circular trail at Intersection #6. There are a few bars and restaurants along the way on the Lower Lake. Swimming, kayaking, SUP-ing and other activities are forbidden here. All these sports activities are allowed at the nearby Lake Predil (20 mins drive).
For additional information, read the specific waypoint descriptions.
Waypoints
Car parking near the Upper Lake
Large parking lot near the Upper Lake, it has space for several hundred cars; cars can also be placed alongside the asphalt road leading to the lakes, after you pay the entrance fee at the toll booth (only for motorized vehicles).
Upper Lake (ita. Lagho Superiore)
The Upper Lake, the "wilder" of the two lakes. It was looking a bit bleaker than its Lower counterpart on the day we visited it. The water levels were also visibly diminished from their normal state.
Intersection #1 / follow the Upper Lake trail
Continue following the Upper Lake trail (ita. sentiero del Lago Superiore).
Intersection #5 / follow the Lower Lake trail
At this point, go a bit deeper into the woods and there will be another intersection just behind you, where you'll start the Lower Lake trail.
Intersection #6 / Upper and Lower Lake trails crossroads
This is the intersection where the trails of the Upper and the Lower Lake meet.
Intersection #7 / Pirona climbing wall
Pirona, sports climbing wall; also an Intersection to another trail.
Intersection #8 / continue straight
Intersection #9 / go left
This intersection leads to several different trails; you want to go left/up and follow along the shores of the Lower Lake
Intersection #11 / go down to Upper Lake shore
Don't follow our trail here, we mistook the signs and continue deeper into the woods. Instead, god down towards the shore of the Upper Lake.
