Itinerary description
Day 1: Frontenac Park Office to Campsite #7 (5 or 6 lakes, 2 or 3 short portages, estimate around 12 km).
Day 2: Campsite #7 to Campsite #10 (3 lakes, one long 800m portage at Kingsford Dam, est around 13k paddling, plus 2-3 km portaging (typically takes three trips).
Day 3: Devil Lake to Chaffeys Locks (5 lakes, 200m portage, est 20 km)
Day 4: Chaffeys Locks return to Devil lake (similar to Day 3, slightly different route, same portage).
Day 5: Campsite #10 on Devil Lake back to Kingsford Dam portage (possible exit point if rented canoes can be picked up here... will have to check with Frontenac Outfitters). Or carry on to campsite #7. Changed to campsite #8 (same lake, better campsite?!).
Day 6: Day 1 in reverse. (add 2.5 km as we will be coming from campsite #8)
Waypoints
Frontenac Park Office
Parking lot is next to the park office. Frontenac Outfitters is a few kilometers away (canoe rentals).
Desert Lake Road
Short portage up and over the roadway. Public dock for easy loading on Desert Lake.
Campsite #7
Sites A and B are good, C and D have a steep embankment that impedes access to water. Campsite #8 is a great alternate option, if it is available, (it was and we booked it for the last night).
Campsite #8
Alternative to campsite #7 for last night. Add 2.5 km to first and last day for 'improved' site.
Dam Portage west
Exit to the right about 50 meters before the dam. Longest portage of the trip coming in around 800 meters. Usually takes 3 passes, first trip is with backpacks and paddles, return to start, 3rd trip is the canoe.
Dam Portage east
End of portage, trail is in good shape.
Campsite # 10
Comes with thunderbox, food storage bin, access to some trails. Bay is not the greatest for swimming (shallow and reedy).
Chaffeys Locks
Bathroom with hot/cold potable water, electricity for charging devices, picnic tables and a short drive by car from Sydenham. Tavern open after Labour day??
