Itinerary description
The 90km Fraser Island Great Walk is a wonderfully unique hiking experience. Explore the world's largest sand island and discover ever-changing landscapes, stunning scenery and fascinating natural and cultural heritage. We recommend taking 5-6 days to undertake the walk, starting at Dilli Village and hiking north to finish at Happy Valley.
Day 1- Dilli to Lake Benaroon (13.5km). Our group caught the barge at Inskip Point (near Rainbow Beach) and arranged for the Island Taxi service to take us to the start of the walk at Dilli. Initially, cross a boardwalk over a creek where melaleucas, swamp banksia and ferns thrive along the swampy verges. Walk through open forests and scribbly gum woodlands and see the spectacular views from Wongi Sandblow. Continue through eucalypt forest to Lake Boomanjin (6km), the largest perched lake in the world. Stroll around Lake Boomanjin's north-western beach. Follow the track up to a ridge and continue through open woodland and regenerating forests of blackbutt and brush box. Here, the vegetation changes and rainforest plants such as kauri pines, vines, staghorns, palm lilies and mosses dominate. Descend to follow the track along the shoreline to the walkers' camp at Lake Benaroon. For further information, check out our FB hiking page "Take A Hike- Qld".
