Itinerary description
The “normal” east loop is 7.3 miles, this shortened version takes off 2.1 miles to equal 5.2 miles.
Ignore the short walk to the road at mile 1.4. I was simply being curious!
>>> FROM SATELLITE VIEW, PERHAPS A SAFER PLACE TO CROSS BACK TO THE TRAILHEAD: at mile 4.9, take yourself off-trail to Driver's Flat Rd and cross. From what I can tell, it appears you'll have better vision of traffic coming both ways (though I haven't tried it ... just sayin')
- - - - - - - - - -
IMPORTANT NOTICE! The left turn into the trailhead parking is; 1) an illegal left turn so a ticket is possible if a Ranger was there and feeling ornery, and 2) dangerous as heck! The vehicles whip around the blind curves at speeds in excess of 55mph.
ANOTHER PLACE TO PARK would be off Drivers Flat Rd which is on the right immediately before the trailhead parking indicated on this recording. The trail goes right thru the parking lot. HOWEVER, you still must cross that crazy traffic AND turn left to get out (yikes!).
BOTTOM LINE, my hike enjoyment went from an 8 to a 6 based simply on the danger level of the parking and road crossings.
