Itinerary description

We went on this hike to the Cooley Mountains in North Louth with the An Oige group lead by Kay. The bus from Dublin took us to a point just below the Flagstaff overlooking the Warrenpoint Narrow Waters. Since the 11 century, this point was used to signal the arrival of ships to Newry and to avoid surprise attacks, and it gives a spectacular view of Warrenpoint Narrow Waters. From there we walked to the Clontygora Tombs, which is a burial ground built by a farming community about 3000 years BC. A short climb followed by a slow descent along a straight pathway lead us to the ruin of an old Shebeen, an illegal tavern where we are told that crimes of passion and murder took place. Then we descended by a winding pathway through the forest to sea level. A route along the banks of the Narrow Water lead us to the site of a bombing where several English soldiers and a local were killed in the Troubles in 1979. A short walk from there took us to the pick-up point for out bus home.
