Itinerary description

Day 3 Oberland Bernese.
From First, up and down the Schwarzhorn, and then down to Grindelwald via Grosse Scheidegg.
From First, it is relatively short to reach the summit of the Schwarzhorn, but very rewarding. Fantastic views from there. The normal path (mark with white-red-white paint) has some very easy scrambling.
There is a via ferrata quite well known following the east-west ridge that reaches the summit. I followed it in my way up. It is clearly marked with white-blue-white paint, then with the metal parts. The most difficult part of the via ferrata are 2 different vertical sections, close to the beginning and very recognizable from the valley, having each 2 and 3 aluminium ladders, as they are completely aerial. The first 1/3 of the ferrata is quite aerial but there are plenty of metal grips and cables for security. The rest, following the ridge up to the summit, is a nice scrambling up, not aerial and without metal parts as they are not necessary for seasoned scramblers.
Spending the night in First is very convenient as you can leave all your luggage in some free lockers available in the hotel.
From First there are some paths and tracks to Grosse Scheidegg, where you can join the most used Via Alpina that crosses all the alps and goes down to Grindelwald.
As this is a very long day, you might consider taking the postal bus in Grosse Scheidegg or in any point down to Grindelwald, but of course walking it is a pleasure as you enter the village passing by some beautifull scenery surrounded by alpine chalets and farms, and always at the feet of great mountains.
