Itinerary description
I've hiked the first ridge of Margalla several times from different starting points. This time, I began at Talhaar Maur, near Monal on Pir Sohawa Road. You can reach this starting point using local transport.
The trail begins at Maur and quickly takes you to the ridge. It's well-marked by CDA and was recently opened by the Chairman CDA, Anwar Ul Haque. After 1.4KM, you'll reach an intersection. Going straight leads to Trail 4 and Trail 6 junction, while the right takes you to the ridge. You can rejoin the ridge through the Trail 4 & 6 junction, but the right turn is better.
From here, you'll be on the ridge with views of Talhaar Valley and Islamabad. The ridge trail is a well-maintained hiking trek, not rough or rocky. The clean air and plenty of trees make it a good choice.
After 7.3KM, take a right turn. A few years ago, going straight provided access to the ridge, but now it's fenced due to construction. So, take the right turn and follow the path to reach the main road. There's an offshoot to Shah Allah Ditta if you want.
To go to Ghea, walk on the main road for about 1KM, then look for an offshoot. After a short distance, there's an intersection. Going right leads to Kainthla and back to the Ridge. Going left takes you down to Ghea. The trek here is rough with small rocks that can be slippery. The last part is downhill with rocks, so having walking poles for balance is helpful.
The trek ends at Ghea village. Leave the village and reach the main road of D12, where you can find local transport to return to Islamabad.
