Itinerary description
The trails follows track no. 6 but not from the original starting point (which is at the top of Castellaccio) but from the lowest point of the trail.
Needless to say, you start by following path no. 6 climbing a steep incline in the woods that at km 0.8 turns right downhill skipping the castle of Pennarossa.
If you follow my track you will keep going uphill to reach the ruins of the castle from which you can take good views of the valley and the hills around. You will then track back that part back to the deviation. The trail will lead you through a very nice but quite technical path all in the forest.
At km 3.2 you will be at Castellaccio, the ruins of another medieval fortress not used at the moment. From there you will start making your way down.
At km 3.5 you have 3 options:
1 - follow the official no. 6 track that will lead you downhill through a main and at times busy paved road with switchbacks.
2 - turn right and walk back the way you came.
3 - follow my track that will take you on the same busy road for a brief 400m to join another path in the woods so to make your descent much more enjoyable. Only the last 500m will be on paved road.
INFOS:
Neat trail with some cool views. Pennarossa is worth a stop, Castellaccio not so much, though the way there is a lot of fun. NO WATER FOUNTAINS, so bring your water. Good shoes, the path is tricky at times. Very shaded most of the way. There are a few river crossings but they shouldn't be terrible even in winter time.
