First section of trail... Please see Pu'u o'o Trail as well...
This section is the Captain's Trail.... 3-4 miles each way and then you start the 4 mile hike on the lava field.
YOU MUST USE GPS!
The trail is well marked until the lava field.... But do not stray from the path or you will be lost!
Then you MUST USE GPS, AND DO NOT RUN LOW ON BATTERY POWER.
Fog, mud, branches, and lava field make this a difficult trail.

Don't get caught. Use common sense. Know your limits..
Is it lawful?.... well no the area is closed.
Is it dangerous? Well so is staying at home.
Is it worth the limited risk for a sane sober experienced group?... YES.
