Itinerary description
Mount Feathertop via Bungalow Spur Tk is a 12km (OW), grade 3 hike, located in Alpine National Park, Victoria.
We commenced our day around 10.30am and arrived at Federation Hut at 4.00pm.
We enjoyed fine, sunny weather all day whilst ascending however the weather turned quickly with misty low cloud rolling in over the Summit and the temperature dropped dramatically to 2oC, so we made the decision to not summit Mt Feathertop.
A good decision as one hour later the temperature dropped below zero and there was zero visibility due to cloud.
We camped overnight at the FedHut camping area in subzero temperature and awoke to light snow, and sleeting drizzle.
We descended in drizzly cloud all day to Harrietville. The conditions were challenging and the last few kms were painful on the legs with full packs!
Water springs were running. Tip: fill up water bottles night before as tank water at FedHut was frozen in the pipes...lucky another camper was upending their excess water, else it was a km round trip in freezing conditions to the natural spring.
Bring matches and some paper to light wood heater inside FedHut...threw out good warmth quickly so we could enjoy our food before bed and again during breakfast/packing up gear.
