Itinerary description

2.2 mile hike with plenty of places to stop along the way. While not long, it is entirely uphill for a mile, sometimes steep. But the reward of entering the area with caves makes it all worth it!

Follow GPS to the starting point of the hike. As of Aug 2021, pass 3 or 4 pedestrian overpasses and turn left near one of these overpasses onto a narrow cobble stoned road. Continue up and through the village. Passing the village, you’ll see a dam and small reservoir (in rainy season). Just past there, there’s a spot near the presa where you could pull in, but just pass there on the left side of the road is a lot for parking. Trail starts there.

There has been recent construction on the trail. (Updated April 2023) The gps will not be exact as they have diverted the trail and built fences to block off old portions of the trail. However, the general direction is the same. The gps will help for starting and the top third of the hike including figuring out how to get down into the cave-like area.

The welcome gate at the top marks the entry to the canyon and rocky area. Go through the gate and go straight DOWN the rocky area. Eventually you’ll feel more comfortable following this trail down. Use three points of contact in this area and warn rambunctious kids to be cautious.

Entry Gate to Rocky Area

If someone is afraid of heights, this is where they should hang out while the others go explore. Go through the gates and go straight….yes down the cliff. Where? Find the rocky spots and make your way down. After a few meters, the rocky path descending will become more evident.

Pass through the rocky area. When it opens up, head to the right to and hug the wall to get to the area with the prehistoric wall paintings. Or go either direction to just climb around an explore.
