Itinerary description
A relatively easy walk-up hike to a volcanic peak in the Virginia Lakes area. There is a designated trail to Summit Pass, and a fairly easy-to-follow use trail to Excelsior Mountain. You can actually see the peak from the Pass, so really it's almost impossible to get lost!
The contrast between the very colorful volcanic rock and the whitish gray granite of Yosemite is pretty amazing, it almost looks like going from full color to black and white scenery. You get some good views from the top, you can see most of Yosemite's high country, as well as North Peak and Mt. Conness' back side. A very enjoyable, relatively easy hike!
