Very short review as I did this with my wife in October 1986, Jiri to Kala Patar, staying at local 'tea houses'. Much has changed since then so I suppose I have very little useful information to impart. We used Stephen Bezruchka's excellent guidebook, A Guide to Trekking in Nepal, fifth edition. It's now in its eighth edition. Travel times are calibrated in hrs/min, and proved very accurate. We also had a local map for the whole route, picked up in Kathmandu.
The only hitch along the way was getting a flight out of Lukla. Without a reservation, we had to wait there about a week.
Back then, food along the way was extremely limited: dahl bat and rice, chapatis, the occasional potato, and apples at Ringmo, until we reached Lukla and Namche.
I will offer this tip: the trail is not as hard as some people make it out to be. My wife had never hiked before yet had no trouble. Reasonable fitness will get you there. I wore trail shoes to Namche, midweight hiking boots afterward. Backpacking in the Rockies is a greater challenge, for a variety of reasons.
After Tengboche, elevation takes its toll, and it affects pretty much everyone, but hiking in from Jiri offers lots of elevation changes to aid in acclimatization. Do take care of your health along the way, as respiratory illnesses were common and prevalent, not to mention contaminated water and food on occasion.
