Trekking carried out between 10/28 to 11/11, 2018
The moment has come. The dream that every mountaineer yearns for all his life opens before us as a wish come true. We are in Nepal, in the Himalayan mountain range next to the highest mountains in the world, about to start the greatest adventure of our life. It will be 15 days of travel where the common goal is the Everest Base Camp at 5,380 m of altitude, and for seven of us the ascent to the Island Peak of 6,189m.
This incredible tour will allow us to contemplate mythical mountains such as Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu, Pumori, Nuptse, as well as Everest itself, the highest peak on the planet.
The group is made up of 13 mountaineers of various origins, the majority from Rioja. Alejandro, Jose Luis, Jorge, Sergio and Laura, from Calahorra. Alberto, Felix and Toño de Aldeanueva de Ebro. David and Dioni, Asturian. Eduardo, from Vitoria and Jose the Valencian who comes from Switzerland, where he lives. Finally, a server, which is incorporated with great enthusiasm from Burgos.
We cannot forget our guide, organizer and especially friend Tika Lamichhane, thanks to whom we have had incredible experiences in this fantastic country of his. Exceptional guide, he has always sought our comfort and well-being to make this trip unforgettable. His huge smile has accompanied us at all times and we will never forget it. Nor can we forget Moti, his nephew, or Radju, this charming and mischievous Sherpa who took us to the top of the Island Peack.
Tika's company is called Aventura Trek Nepal and she speaks fluent English and Spanish, making it a great option for groups of Spaniards who want to trek through Nepal. His website is https://aventuratreknepal.com
We started the trip in Barajas, where we flew with the Turkish Airlines to Kathmandu in a trip of approximately 16 hours, stopping in Istanbul. We will spend two nights in the capital of Nepal visiting the main attractions and monasteries, and on the third day we will get up early to fly to Lukla where the trekking begins. The program for these 15 days is the one indicated below:
Day 1. Lukla - Phakding (2,700 m). Three hours
Day 2. Phakding - Namche Bazaar (3,440 m). 6 hours.
Day 3. Namche Bazaar. Acclimatization day (3,440 m).
Day 4. Namche Bazar - Deboche. (3,733 m). 5 hours.
Day 5. Deboche - Dingboche. (4,413 m). 6 hours
Day 6. Dingboche. Acclimatization day.
Day 7. Dingboche - Lobuche (4,930 m). 5 hours.
Day 8. Lobuche - Everest base camp (5,364 m). 4 hours - Gorakshep. (5,140 m). 4 hours.
Day 9. Gorakshep - Kalapattar (5,580 m) - Dingboche. (4,200m). 7 hours.
Day 10. Dingbohe - Chhukung (4,760 m). Three hours
Day 11. Chhukung - Island Peak Base Camp. (4,970 m). Three hours. We will dedicate that day to preparing all the material and solving all doubts about it and how to use it. For this we will have the advice of a Sherpa.
Day 12. Island Peak Base Camp –Chhukung. (4,760 m). We will start the ascent at two in the morning to reach the summit of Island Peak (6,189 m) and we will go down to Chhukung to sleep. 10/12 hours
Day 13. Chhukung- Pangboche. (4,000 m) 6 hours.
Day 14. Pangboche- Namche-Bazaar. (3,440 m). 6 hours
Day 15. Namche Bazar - Lukla. 7 hours. End of the trek.
In this post I am not going to elaborate on details of each day, as I will leave that for the individual entries of each stage. Say that days 3 and 6 were acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. We were extremely lucky with the weather, as most of the days the sun shone brightly. We slept in the Lodges well chosen by Tika, although as we went up the lack of services was becoming more evident, as well as the price of the drinks. Also meat was disappearing from meals as we gained height, dedicating ourselves almost exclusively to pasta and rice, but that level of discomfort has made the trip more authentic and genuine.
The trek goes through the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1976, and runs through the entire Khumbu Valley to Everest Base Camp. On the way back, while the rest of the group returns through the Chola Pass, Alberto, David, Eduardo, Jorge, Felix, Toño and I will detour from Dingboche through the Chukhung Valley to reach what will surely mean our greatest milestone in our mountain life, the ascent to Imja Tse, known as Island Peak, at an altitude of 6,189m.
Finally, clarify that this trek is not a walk through the mountains that you can do to spend a vacation. We are walking at altitudes that go up to more than 5,000m, so good physical shape is essential. Even with that, the altitude will take its toll on a large part of the mountaineers, being essential to follow the acclimatization and nutrition indications provided by our guides. Two of our colleagues had to evacuate by helicopter in the last days due to severe fevers and flu, and most of us suffer at one time or another some consequence of altitude sickness, but despite everything, this experience will remain engraved in our hearts and in our memory for the rest of our life.
