Itinerary description
We decided to stay in a hotel at 1700 m altitude, "Residence Serra la nave" and start our hiking route right from there.
It was a scary and windy night prior the climbing day. Woke up at 3 a.m., gathered all the stuff, and off we went at 5 a.m.
3 km up to Rifugio Sapienza and then first part of the trail, up to 2500 m altitude, was pretty easy and a bit boring.
After a short coffee-brake at 2500 m, we kept going. Next part is much more beautiful (many great pictures are made there). Finally reach 2700 m altitude... First jeeps with tourists are starting to arrive here at ~9 a.m. We are passing then and guard men stop us saying "You are not allowed to go higher without an instructor". We think "what a f...??".
After that we had to make a big loop to avoid this "hand of the law". When we passed Vale de Bove, we met another group of tourists and their instructor started to insist that we should definitely go down because here it is dangerous. Well, another loop, another bunch of wasted time, and finally 3000 m altitude. Only we both and the nature :) We got to the summit by 14-00. So it was 9 hrs walking. The summit is amazing!!! Very windy, a lot of sulphur, but amazing!
Really stunning when you face it all. Another reality.
Sicily has a magnificant volcano and very greedy instructors :)
Last picture - from the plane, we were so lucky to fly right above Etna.
