UNITED STATES - NEW YORK. LONG PATH - Stage 17 - From Peekamoose Road to Peekamoose Mountain, Table Mountain and Denning Road

⇐ Link to the previous stage: UNITED STATES - NEW YORK. LONG PATH - Stage 16 - From Upper Cherrytown Road to Pople Hill, Bangle Hill and Peekamoose Road
⇒ Link to the next stage: UNITED STATES - Stage 18 - From Denning Road, Claryville, NY, to Slide Mountain, Cornell Mountain, Wittemberg and Terrace Mountain

Tour through section or stage 17 of the Long Path , a long-distance path that runs from New York City (George Washington Bridge) to the north end of John Boyd Thacher State Park in Altamont, near Albany, capital of the New York State. The entire trail is 357 miles (575 kilometers) long, distributed in approximately 35 stages , extending northward, into the Adirondack Park .

This stage 17 goes from the place of Bull Run (Peekamoose Road), to Denning Road, in the town of Claryville, New York.

The route departs from the Rondout Creek Valley, and ascends rapidly exceeding 3,500 feet of altitude, passing the peaks of Peekamoose Mountain (3,843 feet) and Table Mountain (3,847 feet).

On the tour there are spectacular viewpoints of this beautiful region of the Catskills, although the peaks of the highest peaks do not offer good visibility of the environment, due to the density of the forest and the dominant vegetation.

On the tour we also find two sources of drinking water, which come in handy to replenish reserves.

The greatest difficulty of this stage is not in its route, but in the logistics necessary to reach it and return from its end. At Denning Road, at the point of arrival, taxis simply do not arrive and, of course, no other type of public transport. On the other hand, both at the point of departure, and at the point of arrival, there is also no mobile phone coverage (signal is only found in the vicinity of 3,500 feet high). Therefore, the use of two vehicles, one at the beginning, and another at the end of the stage, is essential, if one does not want to suffer an ordeal to return.

General Description

This is a rugged trail section that begins with a three-mile, 2,500-foot ascent of Peekamoose Mountain. Shortly before the top, there is a tremendous view of the Rondout Creek valley. After climbing out of the saddle between Peekamoose and Table Mountains, the trail ascends along the broad, gentle "top" of Table to the summit. From Table, the trail drops to the valley of the East Branch of the Neversink River. The trail then climbs out of the river valley and joins the Phenicia-East Branch Trail. For the entire length of the section, the Long Path follows the blue-blazed Peekamoose-Table Trail.
