Route through the Vitosha Natural Park on the outskirts of Sofia (Bulgaria).
We leave from the church of Boyana, we enter the Natural Park of Vitosha and we go up by a path perfectly signalized by means of great beech groves until arriving at the lake of Boyana. We continue along the path to descend to the Dragalevtsi monastery.
Church of Boyana: church formed by three wings. The east wing was built in the late tenth or early eleventh century. In the 13th century, during the Second Bulgarian Empire, the central wing was added. The church was completed with the west wing in the mid-19th century. The church is famous for its frescoes, made in 1259 on older ones. They represent one of the most complete and best-preserved examples of medieval art in Eastern Europe. In all, there are eighty-nine scenes with two hundred and forty human figures. The author is unknown, but probably belonged to the Tarnovo school. In addition to the first layer of frescoes, from the 11th and 12th centuries, of which few fragments are preserved, and the second, the most famous, from 1259, the church has a few more recent frescoes, from the 14th centuries. , XVI and XVII, as well as 1882. The monument was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.
Dragalevtsi Monastery: Founded in the mid-14th century by Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander, the monastery was abandoned after the Ottoman conquest of Sofia and was restored in the late 15th century, when it became an important literary center. The church of the monastery and some of its frescoes date from this period. The church was enlarged in 1818 and 1932. In the late 19th century, Dragalevtsi Monastery was often visited by the national hero Vasil Levski, who used it as a center for his revolutionary activities. The monastery is currently inhabited by nuns.
