Tour in Danakil (3 days itinerary)
The Danakil tour is probably the must among the things you can do in Ethiopia. Here I summarize the useful information for this very special tour.
-> The tour starts and ends in Mekele.
-> It has a duration of 2, 3 or 4 days: I have chosen the three day tour and I highly recommend it.
-> It is not possible to go to Danakil alone: you have to rely on an organized tour (about 250 euros / 3 days) and armed guards
-> The highlights of the tour in Danakil are basically three: Dallol (with its fantastic geological formations), Erta Ale (climbing to the top of the volcano) and the salt lake.
-> My itinerary was salt lake, Dallol, Erta Ale: this however can vary at the discretion of the tour operator.
-> We leave at 8 in the morning from Mekele and always return to Mekele at 7 pm (approximately) on the third day.
-> You sleep in the open air, both in Dallol (there is a nearby bar!) And in Erta Ale (there is a nearby crater!), Without bathrooms or showers. However, the accommodations are quite comfortable (it is preferable to bring your own sleeping bag: there could be a strong temperature difference between day and night)
-> The Danakil is located at an altitude of -116 meters, and it is hot, but very hot: the visit to Dallol, in fact, takes place at seven in the morning to avoid the suffocating heat of the day.
-> Erta Ale erupted two years ago, and since then it's not easy to see magma: luckily I saw it, and it was very beautiful!
-> The walk to the top of Erta Ale takes three hours, but is basically easy
-> Swimming in a salt lake is always very nice
-> Food is surprisingly decent throughout the tour
-> You will remember the sunsets and sunrises that you see during the tour in Danakil forever
-> Many, too many hours by jeep to go from Dallol to Erta Ale: the last 12 km are on bad roads
-> The tour lasts about 60 hours: it is necessary to calculate that about 15 hours of these are spent inside a jeep
-> The tour in Danakil is part of a beautiful Ethiopian itinerary: https://www.travelsbeer.com/destination-item/viaggio-in-etiopia/
-> Video of the lava in Erta Ale: https://youtu.be/IUw4I1snOLs
-> La Danakil is a place out of the world. I organized it with Nati, whom I met in Bahar Dar, but who still relies on ETT Travels, the largest tourism agency in Ethiopia. Worth a visit? Yes, absolutely, the sacrifices are definitely well paid off!
