Itinerary description

Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia, also known as the picture book of German history. It is one of the best preserved medieval city centers in Germany, with a fantastic combination of rich patrician houses and beautifully restored half-timbered houses.

Because of its many churches, towers and monasteries (more than 50), Erfurt is also called the Rome of the North. Maarten Luther was enrolled as a law student in May 1501 at the University of Erfurt. Later that year he gave up this study and entered the Augustinian monastery. In September 1506 he was included in the order of the Augustinian hermits, and in early April 1507 Luther was ordained a priest at the Erfurt Cathedral.

There is enormously much to be visited and enjoyed here. The beautifully restored center and the monumental church complex of the Mariendom and the Severi Church, which protrude above the city on top of a hill in the middle of the city. Next to the Domberg is the only largely preserved baroque city fortress in Central Europe, the Zitadel Petersburg.

Of the many bridges the Krämerbrücke is the most famous one. This is 120 m long with 32 houses built and still inhabited, with studios and shops on the ground floor.
