UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (UAE) - Ras al-Khaimah (RAK) - Lower course of the Wadi Nahela. From Nahela Breaker to Al Shaagi, and back. Cartographic tour
We follow this itinerary for geographical, topographical and cartographic interest, to confirm and complete some cartographic references of the area, but from a landscape point of view, this itinerary has little interest.
The Wadi Nahela (which in the past was also identified with the place name of Wadi Nahail, and which is also known as Wādī Ghēl, Wadi Ghil, Wadi Nahala, Wadi Nehaila or Wadi Nuhaila), is a dry valley or river, with intermittent flow. , which flows from south to north, almost exclusively during the rainy season, located northeast of the United Arab Emirates, in the Emirate of Ras al Khaimah.
The purpose of the walk is to travel along the lower course of the Wadi Nahela , from the Nahela Breaker, to its mouth, in the area of the Al Shaagi district (Arabic: الشاغي), north of Khatt (Arabic: خت), in the great alluvial plain of Jiri (Jiri Plain) , at an altitude of only 28 meters above sea level (m asl)

During the first kilometer and a half of the route, the Wadi Nahela follows a well-defined channel, with a bed of boulders, and sides of sedimentary materials eroded by water, and unlike its neighbor the Wadi Kiriba , whose once beautiful sickle The mouth has now been converted into a garbage dump and dump, the Nahela maintains its channel and bordering areas very clean and free of waste.

From km. 1.5 from the Nahela Breaker, the wadi channel is losing definition, and is progressively integrated into the Jiri Plain, forming an alluvial fan. Its sides lose height and sporadically it widens considerably and divides into successive forks.
Each new bifurcation distributes the potential waters and the resulting arms lose flow and intensity, so the new channels also lose definition, making it very difficult to determine which is the main arm, especially because, as usually happens in other alluvial plains of similar morphology, With the passage of time, the wadi current can also wander , between torrential rains and others, greatly altering the previous courses, which nevertheless maintain their mark on the plain.
Jiri Plain. The Wadi Nahela is progressively integrated into the great alluvial plain
On the other hand, under this large alluvial plain of Jiri, several deep aquifers run that supply water to the wells of numerous farms and agricultural operations in the area, which in turn try to take advantage of the runoff through the construction of ponds and artificial furrows. that divert the waters towards their respective plantations, and that can be easily confused with the different channels of the wadi.
Wadi Nahela. Small reservoir, possibly artificially formed or reinforced
At some moments we have the impression that the wadi has already completely faded into the plain, but a few meters later we once again recognize the trace of what looks like a riverbed.
Outside the limits of the plantations there are very few trees, and in general the vegetation is scarce: only the usual Samra or Samar Tree (Acacia tortilis) , with very thorny branches, and some jujubes (jujubes / سدر / Sidr tree - Ziziphus spina-christi, a species also very common in the Al Hajar Mountains).

At a certain point, already in the vicinity of the town of Khatt (very popular for its thermal and medicinal waters, and a traditional crossing point on the ancient route of Al-Qaliddi , which linked Ras al Khaimah and Dibba), we consider that it is no longer possible. It is possible to identify the main course of the wadi, because its potential waters will have been completely spread across the alluvial plain, so we conclude the outward journey and return to the starting point, using some sections of tracks open for use by farmers. of the area.
ACCESS TO THE ITINERARY AND PARKING:
The starting point of the route can be easily accessed with a sedan vehicle, although the last kilometer, approximately, is a ballast and gravel track.
Next to the Wadi Nahela Breaker, at coordinates 25.669771, 56.047349 , there are several parking spaces.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL OF THIS ROUTE:
The degree of difficulty of a route is mainly measured based on three factors: effort, technicality and risk , although the real difficulty of an itinerary must also take into account other variables, such as the weather situation, the weight of the backpack and the preparation. or physical form of the walker, who must know how to evaluate himself.
To know the physical difficulty or physical effort required, it is useful to use an automatic assessment system, such as the one provided by the PPI index. This is the index that corresponds to this route:
IBP index: 23 HKG
Total distance: 8.01 Km
Desn. Accumulated climb: 37.2 m
Desn. Accumulated descent: 38.79 m
Maximum height: 83.2 m
Minimum height: 30.01 m
Total time: 2:51:23 h
Moving time: 2:36:33 h
Stopped time: 0:14:50 h
Total average speed: 2.8 km/h
Average moving speed: 3.07 km/h

GENERAL TABLE OF TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY AND RISK LEVELS:
Pictograms with the degrees of technical difficulty and risk of a hiking route
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY LEVEL OF THIS ITINERARY:
Level 2: FAIRLY EASY: Route or section of route with obstacles smaller than or equal to ankle height. The installation of the foot is done by looking for “flat” or “comfortable” areas of the support, quite easily identifiable.
RISK LEVEL OF THIS ITINERARY:
Level 2: FAIRLY LOW: Fairly low accident risk level. Hazard exposure remains limited. Injuries are possible but minor (examples: path in quite marked relief with possible presence of embankments, possible dislocation and sprains in case of fall...)
