Itinerary description
To get to the trail head, take 64 through Taos Canyon, in the direction of Eagle Nest. Keep climbing and go past the top (Palo Flechado Pass). Start the descent and keep an eye out for mile marker 274. Go past it. A bit further down to the right hand side is a parking lot for the trail head. There's a good description of the various hiking possibilities on a sign dedicated to the Elliot Barker trail.
I chose the hike to Apache Pass, which is marked as Trail 1. It starts off with a short part through a meadow. Then, at a fence, it goes left across a creek and after a steep climb the trail comes to a forest road. Go right on that forest road and very soon after keep right at a split. Then just keep walking the forest road that gently climbs and eventually ends up on a large meadow. Stay on the trail through the meadow and take left at the fence to start climbing through a forest. There was a stranded snowmobile sitting on this part of the trail. Then there's another flat stretch and then down it goes to Apache Pass, which is supposed to be the end of the trail. But, once down in Apache Pass, I noticed a sign for Trail 1, which had not been there when I previously hiked this trail. So, I kept walking and was offered a long and rather steep ascent, which crosses several small meadows with aspen. Since I had no clue where this part of the trail would lead, I eventually turned around and retraced my steps. A nice and gentle hike with a few steep parts.
