Itinerary description
From Lenika we followed the blue/white signs up to the top of Mount Oxia, then returned via Aghios Nikolaos to our hotel at Ammadoura beach.
The trail from Lenika to Oxia peak is very well indicated with blue/white signs, and continues beyond the peak down to Elounda (see eg https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/lenika-oxia-elounda-47649259). The views down to the coast are stunning.
Unfortunately the offline map in the wikiloc app doesn't distinguish between simple paths and dirt tracks / roads here, so you may find it useful to have an app which can download openstreetmap maps as well.
The smaller hill which you can see on the way up is at Atzimpraga and there is a quarry there, so you can get a fair number of heavy lorries which reach the quarry via our return route down towards Aghios Nikolaos. In particular, the section between where we joined this road going up, and where we left it again higher up to take the path, is a dirt track, so the lorries kick up a lot of dust. Below where we joined the road is asphalt, so not so bad.
Also, where we joined this road going up you can find a cave. While exploring this we looked towards the small cliffs on the opposite side of the road and were thrilled to see a ravens nest with 4 little chicks walking round it, almost ready to fledge.
