Itinerary description
The Ella rock hike is one of the most scenic hikes passing through lush green forest, rivers, waterfalls and tea plantations. The view at summit is jaw dropping overlooking the tea estates and forest.
The complete hike is about 10kms depending on where you start. We started walking at 7:00am right on the railway tracks as most hikers do by walking about 1KM and finished at 12:00noon . Once you reach Kithalella railway station (keeping the station on RIGHT SIDE), walk a few meters and look for an an opening on the left in the bushes. There's a small river and bridge and the sound of waterfall that can't be missed.
From here on the fork turn left. We lost our way here and took right instead of left and had to walk through dense tall grass with a million insects and leeches. This can be avoided but local villagers take this route - perhaps a shortcut.
The trail is mostly marked passing through the tea plantations in the beginning.
Once up there it changes from open trail to thick forest but well laid trail. The climb from here is pretty demanding and steep. Recommended for the ones who have some basic fitness.
It took us about 5 hours up and down with most of time enjoying the nature and taking pictures.
Despite the difficulties finding the route we enjoyed the challenge and the feeling of adventure. The views from the top of Ella Rock were absolutely incredible and well worth the efforts.
What amazed us most about the views was just how close the other mountains felt. It didn’t feel like a usual hike where you’re high above the other hills and landscapes.
