Itinerary description
Following the footsteps of the Invisible Guardian this easy circular walk starts at the plaza in Elizondo and visits many of the places featured in the Baztan Trilogy. However, apart from a stroll around Elizondo where Dolores Redondo has set her books, this walk then takes to the hills and to the suburbs of Antzanborda and Etxaide to give the walker more extensive views of the Baztan Valley and a greater insight into Basque rural traditions, architecture and culture. The walk leaves Elizondo via the plaza in Elbete and passes two churches,(the churches of Elbete and Elizondo), the cemetery, the water mills of Elbete and Etxaide, salmon leaps, manor houses, mountain farms and barns. It also takes you to Victor's house in Etxaide and to stretches of the Baztan river that inspired the setting for some of the crimes in the Invisible Guardian.
For more experiences of Basque rural culture and pagan beliefs see our English language immersion and walking holidays: https://www.pyreneanexperience.com/inmersion-total-en-ingles-en-los-pirineos/ and explore a week of walks from the door of our house. However for more of the Baztan Trilogy Experience do visit a wonderful, historical cafe in the grounds of the 15th century palacio, Jauregia in Irurita where Pello Iriarte, art historian, consultant to the film El Guardian Invisible and to Dolores Redondo herself, runs the most beautiful cafe in the valley! Pello will tell you more tales about the history and legends of the area. A luxury.
Thank you ..... I am so glad you all enjoyed the walk. The area is an absolute jewel .... there is so much more for you to explore. Best regards Georgina www.pyreneanexperience.com
