Itinerary description
This short circular walk starts at the charming and well-preserved village of ELGORRIAGA, with its mediaeval bridge into the village and distinctive balconies and Basque architecture. Every October this pretty village hosts a lively ‘mushroom’ festival where the village bursts into song, cider flows freely and the locals compete to see who can collect the biggest ‘Boletus Edulis’ mushroom (sometimes known as Porcini). These are then fried in olive oil with garlic and parsley in the village square. So not surprisingly, the village has documented a mushroom walk with various information panels about ‘mushrooms’ en route. The walk climbs away from the village along wooded paths in a 300m ascent to the mountain col at Iturbideko Borda. Here there is a delightful picnic place and fountain (Ituria means ‘fountain’ in Basque) and extensive views over towards the northern valleys of the Bidasoa River. The descent is through open highlands towards a magical mountain shoulder littered with stone circles and dolmens before leading the walker back towards ELGORRIAGA past mountain bordas and their meadows. Back in Elgorriga there are a couple of bars and restaurants: the village Ostatua, restaurant Hilarion (from where the walk begins) and the large spa baths and restaurant to the west of the village. This walk then links up with our SANTESTEBAN/DONESTEBE ELGORRIAGA CIRCULAR ROUTE 13.7km
