Route to the top of the Pico Volcano from the Casa de Montanha

Rate of ascent to the mountain € 10, delivered geolocator (the clouds sometimes prevent to see the way correctly) More information in:
http://parquesnaturais.azores.gov.pt/pt/pico/o-que-visitar/centros-de-interpretacao/casa-da-montanha

It takes about 3 hours to climb and another 3 hours to get off, with stops of about 30 minutes in total per trip. Recommended two canes and boots with good grip.

Undoubtedly the main attraction of Pico and also one of the most interesting places in the archipelago. The Pico Alto volcano imposes itself on the island with its 2,351 meters of height. Declared a natural reserve in 1972, this impressive volcano, with its summit always covered with snow in winter, has equal and steep slopes covered with closed forests up to 1,500 meters. From the end of the forests and up to 2,000 meters, the bushes dominate and then black lava ground without vegetation to the top. This colossal mountain ends in a crater of about 700 meters in perimeter and depth of only 30 meters, crowned on its northwest slope by a 70-meter-high volcanic cone called Pico Pequeno with fumaroles at its base that confirm that the volcano is still active. The climb to Pico Alto is not very difficult, with good physical condition and some perseverance all can be rewarded by the magnificent views that can be enjoyed from the Atlantic and the neighboring islands ... if we are lucky to climb when there are no clouds!

The last eruption of the volcano was in 1718 at elevation 1,300 representing an ever present threat in the life of the island. The University of Ponta Delgada in São Miguel constantly monitors the activity of the volcano through data sensors transmitted via satellite.

Of special interest to speleologists are the volcanic caves -which normally enter the depths of the mountain- among which we can highlight the Gruta das Torres in the village of Criação Velha that can only be explored in part. Furi by Frai Matias is another impressive cave located on the western slope of the Pico, which can be reached up to 600 meters. In general, however, we can say that many of the caves are dangerous and we recommend the practice of this sport with knowledgeable guides from the area and for people experienced in the practice of this sport.

Very difficult trail but the views on the top are awesome. Be aware that you have to pay to get a permit to do the trail!
