Itinerary description
42km of pure hiking in two days, starting from the Austrian side (Ehrwald), and finishing at the German side (Garmisch-Partenkirchen). The winter was not strong enough so there was no water on the trail, above 1900m! Have in mind if you go in summer! The trail starts at 1100m elevation, at Ehrwald ropeway. Alps scenery all the way up - it is beautiful! Gaterl is the place where you enter Germany and leave Austrian soil. From there, Zollhutte is near. We camped there, even camping in the national park is prohibited. We were lucky not to see any ''intruders''. :) In the morning, we went to the Knorrhutte first, to leave our luggage outside (they were not nice to allow us to store our luggage for three hours inside), then hiked the highest peak of Germany - Zugspitze (2962m.). After that, pure downhill all the way down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The mountain-stream water was great for drinking.
