Itinerary description
Gentle circular 60 min walk from our farmhouse in Ameztia, Ituren, with glorious views of the village of Urrotz and the farmlands and mountain bordas of our hamlet of Ameztia. The walk shows of many of the features of Basque rural life, which includes hand-made bracken stacks (used for winter bedding), and outdoor bread oven which used to be found in all farmhouses (caserios) and borda viviendas (mountain dwellings). The walk passes through oak groves and ash groves (the outer twigs of the ash trees being used for winter fodder for the sheep) and passes by traditional Basque farms where the animals are still kept inside underneath the house and serve as additional heating.
