Itinerary description
This hike is the classic end to end hike along the rugged, challenging coastal trail. The first challenge is the car shuffle, getting to the start at Pike Rd and having a car available at the other end. The next challenge is commitment. Going east to west there are no shortcuts past cabin point while the opposite direction has several escape route back to Aylard farm. This group of old guys did it in under 6 hours with no bail outs in spite of evening social commitments. It is a fine hike!
Notes on the GPS track: Add 500 meters to the distance as it took a while for the GPS to start tracking. Note the good tracking for the rest of the hike, all the twists and turn following the coastal trail. Note the real ascents and descents along the track, accumulated ascent 721 m, This is not just noise tracking altitude, My track log in 2010 with a different GPS recorded 712 m in spite of the shortcut from Beechy Head to Aylard.
