Itinerary description
Very challenging trail. The climbs on the west and northwest side are steep but not technical.
Day 1 - I started at the Winding Stairs Trailhead and hiked clockwise with the intent to complete the southeastern portion (Winding Stairs Trail), southern portion (Viles Branch Trail) and the western portion (Athens - Big Fork Trail) done on the first day which would include most of the extreme climbs. I camped a little south of the Athens-Big Fork / Little Missouri Trail junction.
The Winding Stairs Trail section is very picturesque as is the Viles Branch Trail. Both are very enjoyable and fairly easy hiking.
Day 2 - The Little Missouri Trail is very picturesque and fairly easy hiking. The jump between the Little Missouri Trail and the Winding Stairs Trail is not well marked and somewhat confusing. The entrance back to the Winding Stairs Trail is actually back at entrance to the Albert Pike Recreation Area. The trail leaving the Albert Pike Recreation Area goes up to the Albert Pike Overlook and is a fairly steep intense climb that is not well marked.
All in all I feel that it's a great two day trail.
