Itinerary description
It being the birthday month of my daughter and I, she invited me to hike the Eagle Rock Loop Trail. We drove in from great distances and met at the Langley intersection on Hwy 84. After driving over roughly twelve miles of gravel roads we arrived at the Upper Little Missouri Trailhead early in the afternoon. Because of the late start we headed south and crossed three ridges, camping on Brier Creek. Overnight it was extremely foggy and everything was wet as we packed up to start day two. Three more ridges faced us as we trekked south. As we were crossing the saddle west of Brush Heap Mountain, one of the highest points of the trail, the weather cleared and the day broke beautiful. With improved weather and a turn east the trail became much more lighthearted. The Viles Branch portion of the ERL is a pleasant hike after following the ridge crossings. We spent the second night in the Winding Stairs area , a series of bends and rapids on the Little Missouri River. The hike north on the the Little Missouri Trail was at a leisurely pace and we camped along the river near the base of the eastern spur of Sugartree Mountain. The last morning brought us out at a brisk pace. The last seven mile flew beneath our feet and we were back at the trailhead by noon. An outstanding burger at The Dugout in Texarkana topped off a great birthday adventure.
