I slept well tonight, yesterday's stage gave my body a defeat, the demanding stages in southern Bulgaria took their toll and I needed a good night's rest.
We have had coffee in a bar near the border and at the end we have crossed it, without any problem, we had the papers in order, both documentation and Covid passport and the Greek PLF for traveler control.
For Paul and me it is the last frontier after the nine borders that we have crossed on this tour of the E4, it is a big step if we want to finish next year in Athens.
We cross an abandoned railroad track at the height of its station, closed and converted into a bar and soon after we pass Promachonas, the town that gives its name to the border. From Promachonas we began to climb a little to a church located on a hill. We continue climbing, now along a rather dirty road, no one has passed through it for a long time, when we reach the top we have the facilities of Fort Roupel, some military facilities that are saved but can be visited, we approach and Corporal Bill and soldier Gregory come out, who explain to us How was the defense of the Greek soldiers against the German forces in World War II, we also visited the underground tunnels located on the hill. After the visit we descend between paths and roads until we go back up to a small stop where we make a stop to make up.
We always go back down between closed mountains to go back up to a line of wind mills. We descend to the west to surround the mountain range, the river Estrimon, leaving the valley to the plain to empty into Lake Kerkini. We descend, we already have Thermopigi in sight where we stop at a bar with a lot of atmosphere, it is Sunday and there are many families and friends eating, we have a beer and we continue to Charopo, located a short distance away.
We have less than three kilometers to get to the Agnantio hotel, where we have reserved, at the entrance of Sidirikastro.
The accommodation is very good, very nice staff, they invite us to a welcome wine, and we take advantage of their pool that we took at will, a good bath and a good rest before dinner. Good place to relax and enjoy the tranquility.
