Itinerary description

This hike explores a series of dikes that protect the east side of Duncan from flooding. There is a lovely section running alongside the Cowichan River.

The hike starts near the northern extent of the dike, cuts across town to the Cowichan River where the dike-walk begins. One section of the hike crosses through First Nations, Cowichan Tribes, lands. Please be respectful and mindful of this.

There are toilets at Centennial Park and various places along the dike.

The Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an American Volksports Association rating of 1A.

Looking for a hike in the Cowichan Valley? Or, looking for hiking companions? Google "Retreads Hiking Club CVRD".

Duncan's famous 'round bulding'

Built in 1970, the Duncan mayor at the time, Mayor Quaife, told the local newspaper the new building was “a bold and refreshing” design and “at first sight it takes your breath away.” It still is home to Provincial Government offices.

In the fall, a fence is erected here across the Cowichan River which force the fish migrating up river through a narrow channel where they can be counted.
