Itinerary description
Excellent short roundtrip along the coast and to Mullach Charraige Léithe summit with excellent views. Do not forget your binoculars, as you could spot plenty of seabirds (e.g. guillemots, manx shearwater, puffins, gannets, cormorants, fulmars) and also seals. The hike starts at the parking of The Blasket Center. You have great views towards the Blasket Islands (I visited Great Blasket Island later that day). The summit of Mullach Charraige Léithe at 166 meters involves some scrambling (if you wish). Hike partly through pasture with sheep and cows. No dogs allowed on large part of the route.
From the start you walk down the road and then field road down to Béal Átha Bay. Just before the bay you cross pasture through stiles and get to a path along the rocky coast. You get to a viewing platform of the Blasket Center. You then continue along the coast crossing stiles a few times and then getting to the ruins of Ryans daughter schoolhouse. You pass it, cross another stile and follow the path along the coast towards Clogher Head. The path slightly ascends and you get a view of a rocky bay below cliffs where I spotted a seal. There is bifurcation and you take the path leading uphills towards the R559 road. You cross the road on the path and get to a wider grassy path which you follow for a while until you get to a another small path which leads to the rocky summit of Mullach Charraige Léithe. Just before the summit you have great views towards the north from the ridge. You then try (or not) to reach the summit by scrambling a bit between the rocks at the summit. You return to the wider path and then follow this path to a minor paved road which takes you down to the R559 and then on to the Blasket Center where you started. This last paved section is about 1.4 km.
