Dun an Ri, Kingscourt, Cavan, Ireland

This walk was lead by our friends Kay and Tony. Our group of 56 travelled by hired Bus from Dublin, stopping for a coffee on the way. We arrived in the beautiful Cabra Castle Hotel which we visited before starting our walk. The Castle dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, and we were told the story of the famous ghost of Cabra Castle. But I won't spoil it, go and find out for yourself. From there we walked to the Dun na Rí Forest Park, along the banks of the River Cabra, to the picnic area where we had our sandwich. We then walked to the Wishing Well and Cromwells Bridge, passing the old Military Barracks on the way. From there we strolled through the Park viewing all the different trees, so lucky to have an eminent expert in Trees who explained interesting aspects of many of the beautiful specimens. We passed the ruins of Cabra Cottage, the only remaining ruin of a village that once was there. The Park is small, but one of the most beautiful in Ireland. It has various different walks, so you can walk as long as you like without repeating any path. One can imagine the Irish mythological hero Cuchulain who was supposed to have slept in these woods while, at the age of 17 years, he was defending Ulster single-handedly against the armies of queen Medb of Connacht. A beautiful walk, suitable for anyone wanting to admire the forest and get some light exercise. We finished the day with a nice meal in the Dun a Rí Hotel in Kingscourt.
Esta salida ha sido organizado por nuestros amigos Kay y Tony. Nuestro grupo de 56 fue en un autocar desde Dublín, parando como es nuestra costumbre para tomar un café en camino. Llegamos al esplendido Castillo de Cabra, que ahora es un Hotel, donde nos dejaron ver el interior antes de empezar nuestra caminata. El castillo data del principio del siglo 17, y nos contaron la leyenda del fantasma del Castillo de Cabra. No voy a estropear la experiencia, hay que ir al lugar y enterarse. Desde el Castillo anduvimos al Parque Forestal de Dun na Rí, por las orillas del Rio Cabra, hasta llegar a una zona de "picnic" para almorzar. La ruta nos llevó a la Fuente de los Deseos, al Puente de Cromwell, pasando por el antiguo Cuartel. Paseamos por el Parque admirando los diversos arboles, y por suerte estuvo en el grupo un Catedrático especializado en Arboles, quien nos contaba diferentes aspectos interesantes de las bellas especias. Pasamos por la ruina de una casita del pueblo de Cabra, desaparecido desde hace mucho tiempo. El Parque Forestal es pequeño pero uno de los más bonitos de Irlanda. Tiene muchos senderos, así que uno puede andar la distancia que le apetezca, sin tener que repetir ningún camino. Es fácil imaginar el héroe de la mitología irlandesa, Cuchulain, que según cuentan ha dormido en estos bosques mientras, a los 17 años, defendía en solitario el Reino de Ulster contra los ejercitos de la Reina Medb del Reino de Connacht. Un paseo muy agradable, apto para cualquier persona que desea disfrutar del Bosque y hacer un poco de ejercicio. Terminamos el día con una cena en el Hotel Dun a Rí en Kingscourt un pueblo cercano.
